The grand, pale blonde brick wall that announces Liverpool St plays an important role in stitching together this part of Nicholson Street. By its very presence, definition is returned to the street, fine grain is returned to the public realm, and the existing neighbourhood regains a part of an idealised Victorian urbanism of density and scale – which is both grand and human.

In the spirit of its neighbourhood, Liverpool St is profoundly serious at its core with an abiding playfulness revealed through innovative interactions between inside and out; between sanctuary and society. Judicious pops of colour, unexpected exposures of depth and shadow and variations of scale enliven the everyday. The courtyard’s ever-changing garden is eminently enticing, while the rooftop’s sweeping city views inspire both quiet contemplation and spontaneous revelry.

The Railway claims to be, “Everything your favourite local should be” and it’s hard to argue. A fresh refurbishment has retained that authentic 1970s nostalgia while propelling it into the present. Kennedy Nolan knows how Melburnians like to live. In fact, the team led by Patrick Kennedy and Rachel Nolan has been setting the tone for the way Melburnians live for 25 years, whether in standalone residences or high-end multi-residential homes. The practice draws on the evocative power of form, colour, texture and light, as well as the resonance of shared memories, histories and landscapes. Its approach to design draws on the handcrafted sculptural form of modernism, as evident in its projects’ highly individual nature, which transforms relationships between interior and exterior.

Under the leadership of former architect Peter Forsyth, Outline works across different scales and environments to create places that make meaningful contributions to the communities in which they’re located. Through partnerships with leading architects and designers, each project embraces the essential qualities of a site and is specifically realised to promote a holistic lifestyle for residents of the building. The constructive and innovative working relationship established between Outline and Kennedy Nolan ensures an inherent authenticity at Liverpool St. By understanding and anticipating what people want and need from their homes, Outline and Kennedy Nolan create places for people to truly live.

SBLA Studio

Landscape Architect

Whether it’s large-scale public work or intimate, small-scale settings, award-winning landscape architecture and urban design practice SBLA brings decades of diverse experience to every project. SBLA was established by Simone Bliss, who possesses a creative vision with the ability to materialise colourful conceptual ideas into functional spaces. Simone is an active member in the discussion of green field development and high and mid-density housing, working closely with developers and architects like Outline and Kennedy Nolan to push the urban density and middle ground housing outcomes.
