Why should I care about the difference between organic, cotton and conventional tampons?

It's a great question isn't it? There is considerable confusion about the difference between organic, cotton and conventional tampons.  It’s important to have an understanding of these differences as a consumer, so that us ladies are able to make the most informed decision possible.

An organic tampon is made from raw cotton.  Because of this, they are hypoallergenic, breathable and absolutely compatible with the body’s pH level, which is an important element that many don’t know about. Why, you ask?

Our vaginal environment contains many micro organisms living in balance. Lactobacillus is the main vaginal flora found in ideal pH conditions and it plays a crucial role in female health. It produces lactic acid, which keeps the vaginal environment slightly acidic, which helps to prevent the overgrowth of infection-causing types of bacteria which prefer a higher pH. In other words, our vagina has its own ideal anti-bacterial ecosystem.

This ecosystem provides an effective natural protection against infection and irritation, given that the majority of harmful micro-organisms are unable to survive in a low pH environment. Using chemical-free natural and organic tampons helps to prevent any pH disruptions, helping to maintain the natural health and micro-organism balance of our precious lady bits.

Raw, organic tampons are also perfume-free and viscous-free and there’s no chlorine or dioxin used during the bleaching process.  Manufacturing organic tampons doesn’t involve toxic chemicals or bleaches and is as natural as the manufacturing process allows us to be.

Traditionally, a “conventional’ tampon can be made of an array of different things, including rayon, polyester and other synthetic fibres.  They are also treated with chemicals throughout the whole manufacturing process.

Frighteningly, in Australia there is absolutely NO obligation to print tampon ingredients on the packaging.

Many women will simply assume that their tampon is made from cotton because it’s white and has a cotton look and feel … and it may mention something loosely about cotton on the packaging.  This is definitely something that we need to become aware of and be concerned about.  Knowledge of the ingredients and chemical composition of something that goes inside your body for around a week each month is vital.

Think of it as eating food (that you have no idea of the ingredients of) for a week each month… a seriously sobering thought!  It’s one of our most sacred and vulnerable area and needs some lovin’ (in more than one sense of the word!)

During an average woman’s lifetime, she’s likely to use anywhere between 8,000 & 11,000 tampons.  It’s concerning to think how regular exposure to the toxins and chemicals from conventional sanitary products can accumulate in our systems over our lifetime.

At Liverpool St we believe the less toxins we expose ourselves to the better.  There’s enough pollution in our everyday lives, without us knowingly adding to our toxic load, especially when there is an alternative available.  We say - keep your insides as clean as possible, ladies.

Organic, raw tampons mean less processing, subsequent pollution and less impact on our environment. Organic tampons are also more biodegradable than conventional tampons. Our tampons are between 97.5% biodegradable, in the right conditions.

The list of the benefits of organic tampons is long.  So very long.  We urge women to really think about the conventional sanitary products they’ve been using and look to adopting a raw, organic and clean approach.  Your hoo-hah and your health are worth it.

Liverpool St tampons are organic and made from raw cotton so you know exactly what you’re getting.  There’s definitely comfort in knowledge on this one.
